Newton Township is located in the southwest portion of Calhoun County comprising some 35.9 square miles of land use with approximately 2500 residents. It lies immediately southeast of the City of Battle Creek, and just south of the I-94 transportation corridor. The township is typified by open spaces, agricultural land, woodlots, and wetlands with scattered rural residences. More intensive residential development is found adjacent to the Beckley Road Shopping district in the northwest portion of the township.

Newton Township is bordered on the North side with Binder Park Zoo, and Binder Park Golf Course. The terrain is characteristically level to depress ional with wide spread occurrence of muck land. The two watersheds of the Kalamazoo River and the St. Joseph River drain the Township. Newton Township has three open water bodies. Lee Lake is the largest and most developed due to the recreation opportunities. Cotton Lake tends to be shallow and overgrown with emergent vegetation. The third is Hyde Lake which has experienced minor development pressure.

The Goals of Newton Township is the preservation of important agricultural lands, while maintaining the rural character of the community. Protecting the natural features and open space, while directing residential growth to intended areas with adequate public facilities. And provide limited well-located commercial and service activities.
